What the River Knows

I stood by a river in winter and watched it refuse to be rushed. It moved at its own pace, carving around every obstacle, not by force but by patience - wearing down what it could not push through.
There is a temptation to read the river as a metaphor for perseverance, and it is, and it is also not. Because the river is not trying. It does not grit its teeth and press on. It just continues, the way light continues, the way winter continues, without announcing the effort.
I have spent too much of my life treating difficulty as a fight - something to be wrestled into submission. The river offers a different lesson: that persistence can be soft. That you can move around the stone rather than through it, and still arrive at the same sea.
It is late December, and I am thinking about the year behind me. The river knows things I am still learning. How to be patient. How to be changed by the terrain without being stopped by it. How to keep going quietly.
